I have Posterior Tibialis Pain, what should I do?Updated 2 months ago

What is Posterior Tibialis Pain?

Posterior tibialis pain occurs along the inner side of the ankle and foot, usually caused by strain or overuse of the posterior tibialis tendon. This tendon supports the arch and helps stabilize the foot during walking and running. Pain can range from mild discomfort to more significant swelling, tenderness, and difficulty with weight-bearing.

What Causes Posterior Tibialis Pain?

Common contributing factors include:

  • Overuse from high-impact activities or sudden increases in training
  • Weak or imbalanced foot and ankle muscles
  • Flat feet or fallen arches, which place extra strain on the tendon
  • Poor movement mechanics in the lower limb

What Should I Do to Resolve Posterior Tibialis Pain?

Rest and gentle ice can help in the short term to reduce pain and inflammation.

Long-term improvement comes from strengthening the foot and ankle, restoring mobility, and retraining proper movement patterns.

If footwear is contributing to poor foot mechanics or lack of arch support, switching to barefoot-style shoes with a wide toe box and flexible sole may help. You can check out our page for some ideas: [Insert barefoot shoes page link].
